August 2010 will forever be a month to go down in the history books.
Nothing of true historical nature happened that will literally be written in history books for Chad's students to read and learn about in the future. Not that there were not some important things that happened, but meeting your future spouse at 18 years old? Not worldwide history book worthy to most people. Kaitlin is writing this for future reference, so unless Chad wants to add his input on this later, we can. For now you are stuck with my side of the story. Both Chad and I got accepted to Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. It was a dream come true for me. I had always wanted to go to BYU, but I knew it was a competitive school to get into, even if my mother worked there at the time. When I got my acceptance email, I knew. I didn't really have to second guess where I was going, even though I had a scholarship to Utah State University in Logan, Utah and had gotten accepted to Utah Valley University and BYU-Idaho. BYU just felt right. It had already been confirmed by the spirit months earlier I would end up at BYU. Move in was in August. Because of work that Chad and I had done in high school through AP credits (him) and college concurrent enrollment credit (me) neither of us had to take the two most taken and largest (like 600 students large) courses at BYU our freshman year. We instead took the history freshman bundle. The freshman bundle courses were to make sure that the classes that were designed for freshman were actually taken by freshman. They had seen a trend of more seniors in these freshman classes (i.e. freshman writing) and wanted to get actual freshman in them. Book of Mormon was one of those courses, as was HIST 201 (the two courses we were signed up for). At BYU we had to have X amount of religion credits. (Ironically two of my favorite classes ended up being religion courses.) Although there were many different students in these classes, and a lot of different sections with different days and times, they had created these bundles so you took a freshman general course and the Book of Mormon course together with the same students... and could make friends I guess. Which I did. I promise this is not just some random information though. Chad and I were not only in this specific bundle, but the same sections of the classes through the bundle. But that isn't all. That bundle, lead to us being in the same new student orientation (NSO) group. It was during NSO that we met. NSO happened before classes had even officially started. Classes started August 30th. We moved in on the 25th and had a dinner that night with our groups. I missed a majority of our group that night so when we all met the next morning it was a lot of people to take in. I meshed with a few of the girls right off as we started the first official day of NSO, and the guys meshed well too. It seemed like our little group was meant to be together that semester so we could hang on for dear life in solidarity. As the day went on and we were touring the campus, I kept noticing this short kid who had a slight limp and this tall lanky kid who had this super shaggy hair (that was all the rage back then kids and I so wish I had a picture of that. Maybe I can snag one from his senior year of high school from our friend in NY to show you). I asked one of the girls if these two guys had come to BYU together as friends from high school. She said no that the shorter one was from Utah but the other one was from out of state, couldn't remember where. She did remember however that he had a girlfriend. I remember watching them go into the library thinking they had known each other for years due to their air of familiarity with each other. They seemed like they would be good friends to have, especially since most of my dear friends in high school were guys and I was comfortable with that. So I took the chance and introduced myself. But not in the library. It wasn't until we had made our way further across the campus and up the stairs of the testing center that I had my real chance. I met Erik first, the shorter one from before. We made a crazy connection with an old friend of ours and that was the in I needed to get introduced to Chad. Erik was so excited he had to tell Chad! We had this friend in common and was so excited Erik just had to say it! That was when I met Chad. I learned his name, where he was from, and that he was a cool guy. I hung out with the two of them the rest of the day and really the rest of the weekend. We became instant friends. As the semester went on I sat next to the two of them. I tried to steer clear of Chad because I knew I could like him easy, but I couldn't go there, not with a girlfriend in the picture. So I sat next to Erik in Book of Mormon a lot. They would save me a seat since I had to rush across campus from my dance classes to that one and I remember feeling so bad they had to sit next to a sweaty nasty me. But they didn't care. But I also sat next to Chad a lot in our history class. I would be right in the middle of them and we played bejeweled way too much... probably more than we payed attention to our professor. Oops. Chad became my great friend and the seeds of a relationship to come formed from that first semester and that meeting on the steps in the testing center.
